What are backlinks?

Backlinks are the links from external websites. For an example of two websites. Website A and website B.
If the website A link to B or vice versa it will consider as a backlink.

Why you need backlinks to rank your website?

Google considers backlinks as the recommendations and it helps your website in the ranking. Backlinks are one of the most important ranking factors and without it, your site may not rank for some high value and lower the funnel keywords. 

What are the referring domains?
Referring domains means how many domains are linking to a specific website. Some studies show that there is strong co-relation between referring domains and ranking.

As you can see in the above image the more referring domains you have the more traffic potential a website has on Google SERPs (search engine result pages).
